Rachel got home and found Will in the kitchen with two sandwiches and a stack of chips piled high on his plate. She was about to tell him not to spoil his appetite for his grandmother’s turkey dinner, but realized that wasn’t possible. Will could eat ten sandwiches and still be able to polish off a turkey dinner five minutes later.

“Did you get your homework done?” she asked as she took off her coat.

“Almost. There’s more Earth science. I have a test this week,” he said with dread in his tone. “Maybe Grandpa can help me.”

“I’m sure he’ll want to try.” Rachel opened the fridge to check the pan of brownies she had made the night before, wondering if there were enough to bring to her parents’ house.

There was exactly one brownie left, stuck in a corner, and an assortment of crumbs. Will must have eaten them for breakfast.

“When is the test?” she asked him.

“Wednesday. I have some time.”

“Yes, but there’s practice Tuesday, and you’re usually tired afterward. You’d better study today and tomorrow night, too.”

The mention of basketball practice quickly brought Ryan to mind. Rachel suddenly wondered if she should tell Will about her date with him. She would have to tell both the kids sooner or later. She didn’t worry about Nora; she seemed to like Ryan already. But Rachel did wonder about Will. He was older and had different issues about Jack’s death. Maybe he wouldn’t mind, but . . . maybe he would.

She glanced at him. He was munching on the last piece of sandwich and reading a sports magazine.

“I spoke to Mr. Cooper this morning,” she said.

“Oh yeah? About the team?” he asked, without looking at her.

“No . . . not exactly.” Rachel walked over to the kitchen table, to be closer to him. “He invited me out for dinner. On Wednesday night.”

Will blinked and looked up from the magazine. As if he was wondering if he had heard her correctly. “You mean, like a date?”

Rachel realized she had said practically the same thing to Ryan. She shrugged, trying to be low-key. “We’ve become friendly. Because of the team, and you and Andy being friends,” she explained.

“You’re going out to talk about the team?”

She wondered if he was being sarcastic now. Or just really didn’t get it. Or didn’t want to get it.

“I’m sure we’ll talk about the team a little. But that’s not why.” She paused. “I guess you would have to say it’s a date. Yes, that’s what it is. How do you feel about that?” she added, already sensing he didn’t like it.

He looked down, seeming confused. “It seems weird. You and . . . my coach?”

Rachel understood how that must feel strange to him. Will probably didn’t want to—and couldn’t—picture her with anyone who wasn’t Jack.

“We’re just going to dinner,” she explained. “To talk a little, socialize. The way I go out to dinner sometimes with my friends.”

She didn’t really do much of that anymore either. She actually couldn’t remember the last time she had a girls’ night, though her friends kept inviting her.
